Hardwood Lookout (16x20)
This painting is inspired by one of my family’s hiking spots in Algonquin with the same name. My painting is the result of further experimentation, where I played with the idea of colour replacements; not using natural earthy hues, but replacing them with vibrant pigments that border on expressionist art. I was drawn to and challenged by the light and dark values of my original image, to create something different and out of my routine. Using my palette knife and modelling paste mixed with my acrylic paint, I achieved tactile texture on the tree bark and forest floor, while also simplifying shapes throughout the composition with the aim of being playful.
